The King of Pop collapsed at his home in L.A. yesterday – it’s thought he had a heart attack.
Michael’s brother Jermaine Jackson spoke on behalf of the family he says he was taken to the UCLA medical centre – where experts tried to revive him for an hour.
Michael officially died at 10.26pm GMT on Thursday June 25th 2009.
Texts and tweets went round earlier in the evening to say he’d been taken into hospital.
Jackson’s life was often controversial. He was involved in high profile court cases and accusations of child abuse – which he was cleared of.
In recent years, he was pictured in a wheelchair, looking frail, there were also rumours that he had skin cancer and wasn’t eating.
Despite all the headlines, Michael Jackson will be best remembered for his music. He sold 11 million records in the UK and had 8 number 1 albums over here.
Thriller is the biggest selling album of all time.
Jackson had been out of the spotlight for a few years but was due to perform 50 farewell concerts at the O2 arena in London – starting next month. The concerts sold out in hours and tickets were being sold on eBay for thousands of pounds.
Tributes have been pouring in from the showbiz world overnight. Madonna says she can’t stop crying. Ludacris posted on his twitter page “If it were not for Michael Jackson, I would not be who I am or where I am today”. Ice T said “Rest in peace Michael – we will miss your greatness”. Justin Timberlake says “The world has lost a genius”.

Steph in Peterbrorough said “Normally nobody talks on my school bus but today we all started singing his songs – he united people from different cultures and backgrounds”.
