Want to work in radio? Find out what KISS 105’s Lotty Cheshire does as a Digital Assistant.

1. What does your job involve?

Well…! I’m a part of the Digital Team here at KISS. I sort out what goes on the website, what get’s sent out in the newsletter, what you see on our social networking sites, and some of the video you see on our YouTube profile!

To be honest, as soon as I put my foot in the door here I was lucky enough to be able to do all sorts of bits ‘n’ bobs, from assisting creative at our KISS Weekenders to specialist post production and Producing.

“…don’t just sit there! Get out and do something…”

2. What was your first job in radio?

My first job was as a technical operator. That meant either pressing the buttons in the studio at ridiculous hours of the morning or being the techy support when we took the shows outside the studio.

If you want to do anything in programming you’ll usually start off here.

3. How did you get to where you are now?

I started off by getting a diploma in Music Technology at West Suffolk College. With thanks to my Tutors at west Suffolk I managed to get my foot in the door at VibeFM. I got where I am now by doing any bit of work I could get my hands on! Seriously! If someone needed something fixing, producing or editing together.. I was in there!

4. Do you think it’s best to do a course or work experience?

A little bit of both I think. Employers love to see that you know what it’s like to work in a business environment.

If you haven’t got the experience yet then why not volunteer at your local hospital radio? Or do what I did and volunteer at a live music venue? Either way.. don’t just sit there! Get out and do something!

“…learn as much as you can and become an essential part of the team…”

5. What advice would you give to someone who wanted to do what you do?

One bit of advice that has never left me is to learn as much as you can and become an essential part of the team. That way, if something comes up and someone say’s. “oh no we’ve gone off air” or “why isn’t my laptop working” you can jump in, switch it off then on again and you’ll be a hero! Ahem… You get the idea!

Ooooh Oooh and you need to know how to make a good cup of tea..
