One of the most talked about artists of the year Labrinth releases his genre-defying debut single Let The Sun Shine on 19th September.
In Let The Sun Shine Labrinth fuses multiple musical styles to create an exciting new sound. The single mixes electronic dance beats with a hip-hop chorus and Jackson-inspired bridge whilst showcasing his rich, emotive, scale-sliding vocal abilities. The song is effortlessly unusual with a musically experimental edge that has universal appeal.
2010 has already been a stellar year for the 21 year old. He hit the top of the charts as the writer, producer and featured singer on Tinie Tempah’s Pass Out and Frisky. He produced Master Shortie’s acclaimed album ADHD and is currently producing for Professor Green, Devlin and JLS with projects in the pipeline for Jay-Z and Rihanna. Labrinth is undoubtedly the UK’s hottest new talent.
Labrinth’s debut album is due in 2011; “It’s basically a collage about myself,” he explains. “Everything I’ve experienced, every wild sound I’ve heard…I’m like a photographer taking pictures, and each song will be a snap-shot of my experience at that time.”
From Hackney, east London, Labrinth was raised almost solely to the sounds of gospel music till his teens. He discovered music by going to the local studio whilst still at school, he was making beats at the age of 13 and by 15 was playing guitar and keyboards. He taught himself by intently studying artists and songs and “envisioning their mood.” He is as comfortable playing bass, drums and keyboards as he is at a studio desk or singing.
Labrinth’s incredible talent and immense potential was spotted by Simon Cowell who swiftly signed him to his Syco label. Labrinth is the first artist Syco have signed not to have come from a TV platform in six years. As well as signing a deal as an artist, Labrinth has also been given his own label imprint; Syco/Odd Child Records to develop new acts and nurture new talent.
Gifted, stylish, smart and incredibly creative, Labrinth’s potential is limitless both visually and musically. He showcases his ‘Transmissions’ series on his website in a collection of short films ‘showing an abstract side’ of himself. “It’s almost like showing the pages of a book before you see the cover,” he says.
