Story Highlight
Will he call upon old pal Example to help him with his second album?
Nick Douwma, better known to electronic music lovers as Sub Focus, started out as a drum n bass producer, but has since found himself moving more towards the non-generic vein of Chase and Status, who he teamed up with for their smash single ‘Flashing Lights’.
Renowned for his exhilarating live shows, he’s toured with Pendulum, and remixed a who’s who of artists, including Dizzee Rascal, The Prodigy and Deadmau5. He branched out from the underground when he produced Example‘s hit single ‘Kickstarts’. After a busy summer touring festivals across the world, he’s back in the studio working on the follow up to his 2009 self titled debut.
He’s also found time to release a new single, ‘Falling Down’. He took some time to chat to us about what we can expect from his new LP.
Did you write the lyrics for ‘Falling Down’ as well as the music, or did you leave Kenzie May in charge of the words?
Thanks, it’s just a club track that seemed to working really well so we put it out as a free download. I wrote all the music and we wrote the words to the song together.
How did you end up working with Kenzie?
She was recommended to me by my agent actually. I like to work with people that are a bit under the radar, she’s an amazing singer.
The video for Falling Down is made up of festival footage – what was your personal highlight of 2011′s festival season?
Hmm tricky one, there were lots of good ones. Global Gathering, Reading and Leeds were pretty special, also EDC in Las Vegas was amazing – it’s a huge new dance festival in the States.
The illuminated circle you play in looks like something from Stargate – are you a big sci-fi fan?
Yes, though I’m more into visions of our possible near future rather than fantasy Klingon type stuff.
How does it feel being back in the studio after such a busy summer?
Really nice to be back in the studio for a bit, I’m really excited to get the next few songs for the new album finished.
You’ve toured with Pendulum and worked with Example before. Are they (or anyone else) helping with the album?
I’ve had no help from Pendulum or Example on the album… yet. There’s definitely gonna be some high profile guests along with some more underground people on the record but I don’t want to name any names just yet.
What was your best album of 2011, and who are you keeping an eye on for 2012?
I’m really enjoying the new Maccabees album at the moment. This year I’m looking forward to hearing new music from Skrillex, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs and Labrinth amongst many others.
Falling Down is released on February 6th
