Police have confirmed today that they have arrested a 17-year-old boy after abusive tweets were sent to British diver Tom Daley.

In a tweet, Dorset police said: “Regarding tweets to @TomDaley1994 – 17-year-old man arrested this morning at a guest house in the Weymouth area. Enquiries continue.”

Following yesterday’s synchronised diving event, where Daley and diving partner, Pete Waterfield placed fourth, Tom was subjected to a stream of twitter abuse from another user of the microblogging site.

The abuse promted Daley to retweet the message to his followers, adding “After giving it my all…you get idots sending me this…”

After uproar from Tom Daley supporters and calls to ban the user from twitter, he later apologised, saying: “I’m sorry mate i just wanted you to win cause its the olympics I’m just annoyed we didn’t win I’m sorry tom accept my apology.”
