Former South African President Nelson Mandela has sadly passed away.
It’s been confirmed that Nelson Mandela has died.
Mr Mandela, 95, led the fight against apartheid, became South Africa’s first black president, and is widely regarded as father of the nation.
Mr Mandela was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 jointly with former President FW de Klerk for ending apartheid and bringing democracy to South Africa.
In a statement on South African national TV, President Zuma said:
“Our people have lost a father. Although we knew this day was going to come, nothing can diminish our sense of a profound and enduring loss. His tireless struggle for freedom earned him the respect of the world. His humility, passion and humanity, earned him their love.”
As expected, there have been a huge number of tributes to Mr Mandela since the news broke.
Leaving the UK premiere of the movie based on Nelson Mandela’s life, Prince William, The Duke of Cambridge said:
“It is extremely sad and tragic news. We are reminded of what an extraordinary and inspiring man Nelson Mandela was.”
Many celebrities and politicians also took to social media to express their sadness.
